Thomas
Thomas was a waiter in a hotel in Athens, photographed as my tour departed for the airport.

Brian
My grandson is shown in camouflage because at the age of 9 he wanted me to buy him a gun. I bought him a shovel at the Army/Navy Surplus store.  The big question behind this drawing is:  "Do we teach our children to kill?" by example in movie/TV violence and electronic games.

Self Portrait as My Grandmother
This portrait was my way of embracing my Cherokee heritage.  I am an Okie. I was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma.  My parents endured the Dust-bowl that Ken Burns recently highlighted on television.

Self drawn from Life
There was not time to draw Thomas, who was working, or Brian, who was posing perched in a tree, but I took the time (about 5 sittings of 2 hours each) to draw myself from life.

Self in colour drawn from Life
This portrait took me at least 3 times as long as the graphite above it, mostly because I couldn't get the background I wanted.  I put in 5 other backgrounds, and took them all out, attempting to achieve the simple one you see here.

Carson
Carson's mother took this photo on Carson's 6th birthday and I loved it, the balance, the color, the clothing, were all inspiring.  This drawing is done "in the manner of" an artist I admire, Alice Neel, who painted for over 50 years in NYC before receiving recognition of her unique style and gifts.  I tried to incorporate outlines, bright colors and lack of detail.

Berkeley
This photo was taken at Christmas Time, when Berk was c. 15 months old.  Tie-dye rules!  This drawing, too, was executed with the manner of Alice Neel in mind.  I drew another of Berkeley that is much more "realistic".

Artist Self Portrait
This is drawn from life and took a long time because it is large -- also the sun changes the shadows so much that I could only work from about 1:00 to about 3:00 each day, 3 days a week, where I was teaching.  I was wearing the Batman shirt when I began it and decided to incorporate that design as a bit of negative space.

The Prophet
I used this student model in a class demo and happened to photograph as a gift for his mother for Christmas.  This portrait is drawn from the color photograph.  It took me 80 hours + to draw.  This model was artistically gifted and one of my favorite students.  He joined the Navy during the class, and I worried about him all the time I was doing the drawing.

Rembrandt Self Portrait
This self-portrait by Rembrandt, was always assigned around April 14th, our income-tax dead-line date in the U.S.  He looks so worried, like maybe he's not reported everything, or perhaps forgotten to mail his taxes.  My husband loves this painting. Rembrandt is beloved by every artist I know.  He is known for catching his sitter's soul in his painting.
